CHINESE MEDICINE

chinese symbolAcupuncture and Chinese Herbs comprise Traditional Chinese Medicine. Over 5000 years old, more people have been treated by Traditional Chinese Medicine than by any other medical modality in the history of the world. Oriental Medicine denotes a complex medical system that includes major branches of healing, it is an effective, low cost medical treatment that works in harmony with the body's natural healing ability.
Traditional Chinese Medicine maintains that the body, mind and spirit form an interactive whole ("holistic" medicine) with the environment. Only by treating these diverse elements as a single energy system can we attain "balance" - also known as "health".
ACUPUNCTURE

dummyAcupuncture is a complex system of diagnosis and it is practiced based on discerning the "pattern of disharmony" and treating them accordingly.
The treatment is based on insertion of hair-thin needles into the body, at specific points. These points are located along the meridians  or channels, and are easily accessed. The response solicited by the acupuncture treatment is focused on balancing the body's systems which will in turn aid the body in functioning properly.
Acupuncture moves and directs "qi" (pronounced "chee"), which loosely translates as our body's energy. When the flow of qi in the body is interrupted, we develop symptoms, also  called "dis-ease".
Acupuncture stimulates our brains to release beta-endorphins, thereby controlling pain, elevating mood, increasing serotonin, elevating white blood counts and stimulating local tissue healing.

People experience acupuncture differently. Same have a sensation of heaviness created by the insertion of each needle. Most patients report feeling only a minimal sensation as the needles are inserted; some feel nothing at all.
 ELECTRO ACUPUNCTURE

electro acuElectro acupuncture is the application of electricity to the needles that had been inserted in the skin. Because the application of electrical current greatly enhances traditional acupuncture, it is used to replace manual stimulation of the needles. Electro acupuncture, uses a Tens unit, which is a  machine which gives an electrical stimulation to points selected by the TCM practitioner.
Western physicians began to experiment using the sense electrodes to treat without acupuncture. Acupuncture has been studied by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to treat the following problems as well as some not listed here:

  •  Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever)
  •  Asthma
  •  Dental pain
  •  Depression (including depressive neurosis, and post-stroke)
  •  Dysmenorrhea
  •  Facial pain and spasm

AURICULAR ACUPUNCTURE

The theory is that the ear is a micro system for the rest of the body, in contrast to the acupuncture macrosystem of meridian channels that extend over the whole body. Other examples of micro systems include hand and foot reflexology, face acupuncture and iridology. Auricular acupuncture was discovered by Dr. Paul Nogier in 1951. The ear represents the whole anatomical body, but in an upside down orientation. The ear is compared to an inverted fetus, with the head on the lower ear lobe, the feet at the top of the ear, and the rest of the body in-between. There are up to 200 acupuncture points on the outer ear, each point named after an anatomic area or body function, such as hips, knees, stomach and heart.
The corresponding points are stimulated to encourage the body to heal itself. Each acupoint on the ear triggers an electrical impulse from the ear to the brain and then to the specific area of the body being treated.

Auricular acupuncture helps headaches, body pain, sleep troubles, depression, stress, anxiety, addiction, fear, obesity, hypertension, anger and food cravings by regulating the sympathetic nervous system. Mentally and emotionally, it promotes feeling clear, calm, alert and focused.

                                       EAR SEEDS/ TACKS

Ear seeds are like time-release acupuncture. Small black seeds from the Vaccaria plant are secured in the ear with a piece of adhesive tape over specific acupuncture points. The seeds stimulate the point by exerting mild pressure. The patient can rub or press on them for an added effect. They stay in the ear for 2 days up to a week.
Ear seeds are especially effective for addiction, mood disorders, obesity and pain.
auricular magnetic therapy: involves taping magnetic balls or pellets to auricular acupoints.
auricular massage: involves pinching, pressing, or rotating all or part of the ear.
auricular moxibustion: thread incense moxibustion, a variation of direct moxabustion on the acupoints on the auricle .
auricular reflexology: reflexology of the ear.

CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE

Chinese Herbs are seen as the cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Chinese Herbal treatment effects change in the body - thereby reinforcing the changes begun by acupuncture treatment.
An Herbal Medicine may be prescribed on its own or in conjunction with Acupuncture. The purpose of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine is to return flow of energy and blood to normal and to reinstate normal organ function. This will encourage restored function in the area and the body will begin to heal itself. Chinese  Herbal Formulas consists of 2-30 herbs that work in harmony with each other. They are prepared in such a way to make them safe and easy to digest. These include flowers, roots, barks, peels and fruits, each with its own properties and pharmacological actions.
Patients can benefit from the convenience of Chinese herb tablets, the ease of Chinese herb tinctures and powder or the strength of Chinese raw herbal teas and decoctions.
Herbal formulas are chosen and designed for each individual patient.

*CUPPING

cuppCupping is a safe, non-invasive, and an inexpensive technique, which practitioners use to treat a myriad of conditions, like colds and flu, upper respiratory infections, and problems of the internal organs. Recently, cupping has been in the media for muscular pain, bone pain and spasms, particularly on the back and shoulders, and also helps successfully cellulites.  Cupping therapy stimulates micro blood circulation, to the localized area. The cups are round and are usually made of glass. The cups are warmed inside, which creates a vacuum. The cups are then placed over the selected area, which is usually on the patient's back.

Cupping is primarily used when the Qi is inhibited at certain points, or when Qi stagnation needs to be drawn to the surface of the body from deep within. Cups are sometimes placed over an acupuncture needle that has been inserted. Moving or sliding cupping, which is a variation, may also be performed.
*GUASHA

guasha toolsGuasha is a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique that involves stimulation of the surface of the skin with a round-edged instrument.
The scraping of the skin results in the appearance of reddish/purple echymosis petechiae (the “sha” of gua-sha), breakage of the subdermal blood vessels, which lasts 3-5 days after treatment.  The appearance of the “sha” is a desirable confirmation of the efficacy of the treatment.
Guasha removes blood stagnancy, which is considered to cause harm to the body by disallowing healthy circulation of the blood through the tissues.  Immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever/chills, cough, nausea, etc. is commonly experienced.
Guasha can be used for many different types of disorders including acute upper respiratory problems such as cold/flu-like symptoms, chronic aches and pains, digestive disorders, and may be helpful in alleviating symptoms of multi-systemic disorders such as sleep apnea and headaches.

*MOXIBUSTION

moxaMoxibustion is the process of burning an herb called moxa (aka mugwort), which provides warmth at specific acupuncture points. Moxibustion has unique healing properties as it warms the area, increases circulation, and alleviates pain. Practitioners of Oriental Medicine also use moxibustion to prevent illness, boost immunity and increase vitality. Moxibustion can be applied directly to the body, indirectly to the body on top of a layer of ginger, garlic or salt, near the body if moxa sticks are used, or attached to needle handles when used in combination with acupuncture.  Spray-on moxa is usually used with heat lamps, and activated moxa heat packs can be worn under the clothes all day.
FOOT SPA DETOX

Why do we need to detoxify our body?
We are all exposed to toxins every day, in the water, food, air etc. Drugs become part of our toxic load. Most people have metal toxins in their body as well.
How does the System work?
The foot spa contains water, a saline solution and an electro magnetic device called an array. The System produces a charge which stimulates the cells within the body. The positive and negative charges in the water allow the body to attract and use the negative ions to re-balance and release toxins. The most convenient and effective way to release these toxins is through the 4000 pores on the feet. Following a treatment the body will continue to detoxify for up to 48 hours.
The System helps to re-balance and re-establish the Bio-Energetic Fields of the body.
The water change colors because of the interaction of the toxins released from the body in combination with the metal from the array when creating an ionic field in the foot spa.
Practitioners link color changes to areas of the body, based on their experience.
To receive the maximum benefit, initial six treatments are recommended during 4-6 weeks period, with a monthly maintenance treatment after that.
To eliminate metal toxicity are necessary two treatments/week for a longer period of time, sometimes up to six months.
It is important to drink water after the treatment. Water is a crucial element for delivering nutrients and oxygen through the body. It helps regulate the temperature of the body, reduce friction in the joints and assist body functions.

KOREAN HAND ACUPUNCTURE ( KHA) - KORYO SOOJI KIM

KHAKorean Hand Acupuncture is an acupuncture method invented by Dr. Tae Woo Yoo 1971-1975 and is used by doctors, acupuncturists, etc. in private clinics and in hospitals around the world. The treatment of KHA is performed on both hands. It is based upon the theory, that the hand is a micro-universe of the human body. The backside of the body is represented on the backside of the hand and the foreside on the palm of the hand. The functions of human physiology can be influenced by stimulating specific corresponding points on the hand for the treatment and prevention of specific conditions and for health maintenance.
The advantages of the Korean Hand Acupuncture
It is one of the most efficacious acupuncture treatment experienced in clinical practice. There are several options to using needles and this is extremely important in certain circumstances:

  • When a person has a fear of needles
  • When a child needs treatment
  • When a person is too sensitive to the treatment

MEDITATION/ PRAYER/ RELAXATION
"And all things, whatsoever
                       you shall ask in prayer,
                       believing, you shall receive."
                                                      -Mathew 21:22

meditateOf all the methods available to Chinese Medicine, this is considered to be the most important aspect. It is most important to nourish the spirit, and it is only of secondary importance to nourish the body. The spirit should be “pure and tranquil, and the bones should be stable.” This is the foundation of long life.
The mind is the innermost aspect of ourselves as human beings and therefore the most essential, but also perhaps the most difficult to access. However, it is the level of the mind in which true miracles can occur. These may be in terms of our health, where meditation or visualizations exercises can sometimes reverse serious diseases.
There are several levels at which meditation can be practiced. You can practice it purely on a mundane level to attain relaxation and joy. On a more spiritual level, it is possible to practice meditation to attain freedom from suffering and allow your true nature, your compassionate heart, to shine forth. Simply, meditation is a state of mind, which does not seek to manipulate thoughts and emotions, but merely to allow them to settle of their own accord. The most important thing about meditation posture is that the back should be upright, so that the spine is vertical. The back is traditionally said to be “like a pile of golden coins or straight as an arrow.”

Whatever it is you seek, to know…
Whenever you meditate on it, you are communicating with SOMEONE far greater than you.

creation  We call HIM :
OUR FATHER - DIVINE GOD

When you meditate on it, meaning anything, you are at a beginning point. We are all simply seekers in the great mystery that is life. Meditation is about prayer, breathing, contemplation, introspection, attention, intention, demonstrating, perception, awareness, self-healing and it is about being present in the moment. It is the foundation to happiness and the fulfilment of your dreams.
Practicing meditation each day for a given amount of time can be comfortable. The time of day should be suited to the practitioner, although practicing in the morning is more helpful because this is when body energy is fresher and stronger. Meditating in direct contact with nature can be very inspiring. Meditation provides an inspiring environment for the mind, thus thoughts and emotions settle, allowing inner clarity to rise.

MUSIC/ SOUND THERAPY
"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words
and that which cannot remain silent."

-Victor Hugo-

ancient musicMusic Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music has always been part of celebration in the divine or social context. The history of music therapy can be traced right back to the origins of mankind and its process of socialization… even though it definitely wasn’t called music therapy back then. It could have been called Ook, or perhaps it was called Tum Te Tum. Whether it was beating of sticks on rocks in the Stone Age, or the splendid compositions of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Vivaldi, music has touched all of us in ways that are beyond words. The idea of music as a healing influence which could affect health and behavior is as least as old as the writings of Aristotel and Plato. Music has been used throughout human history to express and affect human emotion. In biblical accounts, King Saul was reportedly soothed by David's harp music, and the ancient Greeks expressed thoughts about music having healing effects as well. Many cultures are steeped in musical traditions. It can change mood, have stimulant or sedative effects, and alter physiologic processes such as heart rate and breathing.

TUINA/ CHINESE BODY WORK THERAPY

tuinaMassage has been a central pillar to many healing systems, such as Chinese medicine, as well as to many European and indigenous cultures. Tuina is an ancient form of massage based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. From a TCM perspective, pain or disease occurs when there is disharmony in the body.  Disharmony occurs when yin/yang energies in the body become imbalanced or when qi (energy) stagnates.  Improper diet, lifestyle, overuse, injury or trauma can all lead to disharmony. Tuina, like acupuncture focuses on correcting these disharmonies.  It utilizes various massage techniques and passive movements to bring about positive changes in the body.
The main Tuina methods include the use of hand techniques to massage soft tissue (muscles and tendons) injuries of the body, acupressure techniques to affect the flow of Qi, and stretching techniques to realign the musculoskeletal and ligamentous relationships.

At times, external herbal poultices, compresses, liniments, and or salves are also used to enhance the therapeutic effect. Tuina prevents and treats external and internal disease. It is commonly used to treat muscle/joint pain, stiffness and immobility.  It can also be used to treat internal problems such as digestive, menstrual and respiratory disorders. Tuina helps to promote blood circulation, alleviate pain, relax muscles, soften swellings, improve joint mobility, and improve immunity and well-being.
Conditions that Tuina helpsPain, Headache,  Migraine, Stiffness, Arthritis, Strain and Injury, Fatigue, Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Stress, Constipation, Indigestion, Menstrual Cramps

TCM NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."
~Hippocrates

FoodDiet is one of the most influential factors affecting our health and it is also one that we have the most control over.  With proper diet and lifestyle we cannot only recover from diseases quicker, but also avoid illness altogether.
Good nutrition is the foundation of good health. Everyone needs the four basic nutrients: water, carbohydrates, proteins and fats-as well as vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients. To be able to choose the proper foods and better understand why those foods should be supported with supplements, you need to have a clear idea of the components of a healthy diet.
According to Eastern Nutrition Principles every food has an affect on the body.  Foods are described by flavor and nature.  Foods can be either hot, warm, neutral cool or cold in nature.  The flavors are normally broken into six groups; sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, salty, and bland.  Each of these flavors has an affinity for specific organs and Qi pathways.  Eating the right foods according to your body type and health concerns can help your body recover from problems as well as keep you from becoming ill.
In China, the concept of “functional food” (that is food offering therapeutic benefits apart from nutrition) dates back 4000 years. Functional foods usually contain significant levels of biologically active components, which boost a person's physical and physiological well being.

HEALING WITH FOODS
The foods not only provide the nutrients that the body needs, but also cure or relieve the problem via their therapeutic actions.
TCM diagnosis and therapy are based on differentiating symptoms and signs, and this is incorporated into the selection of functional foods. Specific groups of signs and symptoms indicate specific treatment protocols.
Supporting Yin  – when the yin is strong, all body processes are “well-oiled” and we have a good reserve of fine quality nutrients to build new tissues and repair and maintain our bodies. The key for restoring and supporting our yin is rest.
Supporting Yang – which is the fire of our body. All the processes require heat. We can support this process by keeping warm and moving. When yang is deficient we need to avoid too much cold food and liquid into our bodies as this puts out the digestive fire. Instead we need to favor foods and cooking methods that warms up.
Supporting Qi – we make it by combining food ad air. Our ability to make Qi will depend partly on our physical constitution, partly on our lifestyle. Simple- our Qi is our available energy.  To support and increase Qi we need to eat foods which release energy steadily into our system. This quality is described as complex carbohydrates which are sources of energy.
Supporting Blood – which nourishes our muscles, organs, brain, etc. Our ability to produce blood is strengthened by maintaining a balance between rest and physical activity. A diet rich in fresh vegetables, dark greens- is essential. As all food forms the basis of blood, we say : Eat well and widely!

Nutrition Needs Change Throughout Life
Pursuing the goal of life-long wellness requires us to adjust and match our nutritional intake according to our age group. Every food possesses unique properties with specific nutritional value. Some foods are blood builders, others are brain foods, and yet others are muscle foods while the rest may be energy foods. It is in our best interest to have a wide selection and keep rotating our choices for the sake of variety.
To stay healthy, you should eat according to your age and physical needs. A diet that does not provide adequate nutrition to support the physical demands made on it, or is in excess of what the body needs, is harmful and could lead to serious health problems. Eating three meals a day at fixed times, in moderation, and with lots of variety is recommended.
These recommendations are a simplified list that you can use in conjunction with other modalities such as acupuncture and exercise.  These are simple guidelines and by no means complete.

Ask your acupuncturist which category applies to you and help your self eat better.

Please be advised that these are only minor recommendations for diet.  To learn more about eastern nutrition and how it can help you feel the best you can, consult your acupuncturist or eastern nutritionist.
In addition to the following recommendations remember to eat fresh foods ideally grown and prepared without chemicals, pesticides or preservatives.  Avoid foods with refined sugars, excessive salt, or saturated fat.  Make sure that all meats cooked thoroughly to avoid any bacteria or parasites.  Keep vegetables cooked for short times to conserve the vitamin and nutrient content. Increasing fiber is also a good way for most people to keep their digestive system operating at its best.

TDP LAMPS

TDP stands for for Teding Diancibo Pu, which translates to "special   electromagnetic spectrum" lamp.
We are proud that we can offer this treatment!

TDP lampTDP lamps create mineral infrared waves that treat numerous ailments, a few common ones being back pain, shoulder pain, joint pain and arthritis.
Unlike conventional infrared lamps and therapeutic devices, the TDP Lamp features a round plate coated with a proprietary mineral formation consisting of  33 elements essential to the human body. When activated by a built-in electric heating element, this mineral plate emits a special band of electromagnetic waves that coincide with the wavelengths and intensity of the electromagnetic waves released by the human body. The absorbed electromagnetic energy has been found to yield therapeutic effects on the human body.

The following application guide is directly translated from " Principle and Application of Mit TDP" published by the International Society of TDP. Acupuncture is a useful method of treatment for many diseases and illnesses, often yielding excellent results within a relatively short span of time. However, without experienced acupuncturists, hard-to-reach and obscure places on the body can be very difficult to successfully treat. In these case, Mit TDP use can be applied with acupuncture to produce Synergistic results. Mit TDP, which is able to cover a greater area on the skin surface, proves very useful in these situations with acupuncture, and can even be used alone to avoid pain or bleeding.
